So if I link my project's footage, create a sequence, and am ready to finish and export, how do I get the maximum quality out of my project?
Isn't DNxHD pretty much as good as it gets, for a reasonable file size? Thanks so much for your help, I really do appreciate it. Project was created using P I was wondering if it would work if I took the final sequence, deleted the media or un-linked the clips, then did an import using the DNxHD option.
Not sure how to un-link the clips, but can't be that hard. Other than not having to import a lot of clips at the beginning of a project, which can take time, what is the real advantage of using AMA linking?
I am not usually pressed for time, so I can set up a batch import, go to bed and in the morning, I am ready to edit with actual Avid media. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for all your help, I think you are one of the better moderators on this site, we're lucky to have you. Importing - by that the old import tool - is based on old code and tools.
It should be avoided for quality reasons alone. The pretty much accepted method these days is Link and either Consolidate if the codec in question is what is known as Avid native or Transcode to an Avid codec.
For many, many reasons, this is the way to go. I avoid the classic import tool except for stills. At this point with your linked media, you should be able to transcode it to DNxHD and work like you normally would. Or if you've already cut a sequence with the linked media you should be able to transcode the sequence to DNxHD Then you could export. Here is the answer to your question. It overwrites other metadata.
Treat them seperately. Tape for tape, disk label for file based media. You can then force a relink by choosing custom columns such as your "disk label" and TC for example. You've also got a very intricate way of then finding all of your media at an explorer level and also within Media Composer using the above method. If the drive letter changes, it won't matter too much because of all the redundancy and labelling features explained.
Its better if the sequence in its bin and only the freshly AMA linked clips are highlighted before relink but any additinal clips should be ignored. For simple jobs I AMA link all the original sources and then relink the sequence it only uses the ones that match. Thanks, Craigo And will drop the Tape name notion, as you suggested. I source-color the links and can locate any missing Consolidates or Transcodes once sorted by Name.
Also, I've found I can create a large bin of a Project's full inventory of Linked Master clips, by dragging a hiighlighted copy out of the Media Tool into a new bin. I would use that bin to Relink to original files, if I ever needed to. You can trash the AMA databases and that may work. Hi Pat, For a v In my case Sequences are not using Linked Clips.
I have plenty of Avid Media Files from years ago. If not Consolidate, does MC permit a. Reply Contact. Thats not a work around thats the technique I teach. HP Z 3. I know that it's best to cut with transcoded clips, but alas, the project was set up that way and will be transcoded later. And the AMA files are over 3 drives. How fast should the external drives be? And are there any other limitations? Our Mac is OS X Using Media Composer 8. Is it wiser to stop the edit and transcode?
We are planning to later transcode to DNx for finishing- Will this be a good format for broadcast? Later we will be cutting an hour to an hour and a half show. Thank you! Transcode to something smaller than and then transcode the timeline for the final uprez. Thanks so much! I always like keeping linked media in its own bins, then transcoded media elsewhere. Thank you fall or your help! Thank you so much and to everyone else who responded to my question! I do a lot of training and part of that is exactly these workflows.
The key always is to plan a workflow and run it by somebody who knows about AMA The do a small scale test following the steps exactly using a sample of all the sources you expect to use. AMA link then ok now its just link them Maybe make subclips and sort them. Transcode as noted elsewhere handle framerates correctly Edit.
Bring in more AMA sources just like you will in the real job either Transcode or edit in as AMA and then transcode the sequence skipping already transcoded media Finally export out sample sequences for review The take the smaple timeline to a different Avid and ensure you can AMA link the needed sources and transcode to the finishing resolution.
